Kidder, Peabody & Company is established.
1824
Founded by John Thayer, it is subsequently located at 113 Devonshire Street. Henry Kidder joins in 1847, and the company adopts its present name in 1865. The oldest private banking company in Boston, it becomes the exclusive American agent for Baring Brothers and the chief competitor to Lee, Higginson & Company for investment business in Boston. Chartered as a trust company in 1927, it is forced to liquidate most of what is left of its assets in the winter of 1931. The company’s name is subsequently purchased by a much smaller company and moves to New York City in 1902.
